“It was Lars Popp’s first trip to Japan, and he took full advantage of it. The kid hiked and sent it relentlessly—even after sessions ended, you’d find him checking another spot. We’d just about wrapped up a day shooting some avalanche barriers off an old mining road, and the runout of his last hit went right down to the street and into the snowbank on the other side, leading to the side-hit idea. Meanwhile, the RV was already warmed up, so Nicholas Wolken thought it’d be fun to belly-flop off the roof of the driving vehicle as Lars grabbed melon. This is what we’re calling #synchrosidehits from now on.” Photo: Aaron Schwartz
