“You only have to do something stupid once per month to ride every month of the year. You’ll get some great looks and maybe even a snide comment at the trailhead where everyone else is out for a midsummer hike with their best cargo shorts on and you go strolling past with a board on your back, but this was pushing year three of #turnsallyear for me and there are some lines that I only ride in the heat.
This August day, we turned up at a local summer shred spot and took a couple of laps. I’d been looking at this little snake line just up the hill. I wasn’t sure if it would go and my wife and dog were getting over it, so I grabbed my drone and booted up and over a rock wall then dropped in. The snow was just getting to the right temperature so I felt confident I could hit the brakes at the bottom of the line. I fired the shutter as I got to the choke and the snow bridge collapsed behind me.
The past few years in the Sierra have been easy to hunt out some patches, but I know people who ride year-round all over the map, from Tahoe to New Zealand, even Scotland. I’m not lying and saying it’s always good out there, but that’s not the point. The next summer day you wish you were snowboarding just go—there’s a chance it’ll be fun.” Photo: Riley Bathurst
