COVER “When Griffin Siebert gets an idea, you run with it. The groomers were firing at Brighton, UT on this early December day in 2017. So we woke up early, got first chair, and waited for the shadows to align. I then shot this with a drone because they wouldn’t allow me to climb the lift tower.” Photo: Bob Plumb UP TOP 01 “The Jackson brothers were in Hakuba, Japan with their brother-in-law, Fredi Kalbermat-ten. After a long day splitboarding around and riding some amazing terrain, we took one last run to the bottom and I had the opportunity for one more shot of Eric.” Photo: Scott Serfas 02 “Considering I’ve spent the last two decades shooting in the Whistler, BC backcountry, it’s rare to find a new jump, especially in a zone I’ve been to plenty of times. But each year, the snow and wind are different, creating new features year in and year out. This front 3 by Chris Rasman is from a completely new stepdown that we found this winter, and, man, it’s massive. Come to think of it, maybe it was just too big for consideration in past years?” Photo: Scott Serfas 03 “Eric Jackson earned every turn on this Thompson Pass, AK line. We rode about 35 miles from camp on snow machines to the Deserted Glacier, where we found perfect evening light. After he got to the bottom, E-Jack said the hike up was scarier than the ride down.” Photo: Justin Befu 04 “The best thing about heli-boarding might be the perspective it offers. Sure, the descents are insane—big, steep, untracked mountains—but an up-close aerial view of the alpine never fails to blow my mind. On this day with H20 Guides out of Valdez, AK, our group lucked into the last flight home. The pilot let me open the window and snap a few pho-tos. The glacial formations directly below us immediately caught my attention, including this dino-esque patch of ice that was probably a quarter-mile wide.” Photo: Colin Wiseman 05 “Jeremy Jones had a crazy idea to hand-build this loop at ‘The Spot,’ at Brighton, UT. It took a lot of tries to get it, including an attempt where the nose of his board got stuck in the logs while he was upside down, but Jeremy eventually made it out the other end clean.” Photo: Bob Plumb 06 “It was my first day of shooting for the season and we went to Semnoz near my home in Annecy, France. While looking for spots, Pierre Scafidi and I found this tunnel that is part of the alpine luge track in the summer. He did a little ollie, shot the tube, and hit the brakes before exploding on the exit.” Photo: Julien “Perly” Petry 07 Severin van der Meer, off the lift and into the white room in Wallis, Switerland. Here’s Kael making his first turn off the summit after a long ascent and a short break atop the volcano. It was 90 degrees in town and perfect spring conditions up high—my last run of the 2016-17 season.” Photo: Colin Wiseman 09 “Why does Cees Wille make spots look so small? Because he is just too tall. Like a fisheye, in a way his height distorts reality. So we had to put two smaller guys in the middle of the shot to give this spot in Moscow, Russia the scale it deserves. Cees slides while Sparrow Knox and Will Smith provide perspective.” Photo: Matt Georges THE SNOWBOARDER’S JOURNAL 015
