REWIND HEAVEN AND HELL Words and Photo Mark Gallup In the spring of 1992, Craig Kelly made his first trip to Island Lake Lodge, BC, along with Ken Achenbach and Lester Quitzau. We named a few runs on this trip, as Island Lake was still pretty new. On this run, Ken said, “You guys should name this Snowboard Heaven.” We were halfway down, everybody had big smiles and nodded their heads in agreement. We continued to the bottom only to find ourselves in a big basin that we had to hike out of. As Ken boot-packed out of the big hole, he said, “You guys should call this Snowboard Hell!” To this day the upper half is still called Snowboard Heaven and the lower half is still called Snowboard Hell. 024 THE SNOWBOARDER’S JOURNAL
