Forty-five minutes as the crow flies from Campbell River. If you know someone who knows what they’re doing, there’s a lot to be explored up there. That’s Mikey Wright, Austen, Bryan and Red. It was Mikey’s first time in a helicopter, just two weeks before he was supposed to be at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach surf contest. While every other surfer competing was in Australia training at Bells, Mikey was snowboarding on Vancouver Island. All the other dudes were stoked to have him there. They got dropped back off at Campbell River and the other half of us—me, a filmer and a producer—met them at a dock, jumped on a boat and went to the Nootka Wilderness Lodge where we spent the next five days of the trip. 086 THE SNOWBOARDER’S JOURNAL
