CONNOR WOOD (05) ANNETTE VEIHELMANN (03) Originally from Berlin, Annette Veihelmann moved to the United States after high school to study at Bellingham, WA’s Western Washington Uni-versity. There, she quickly fell in love with the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty, people, snowboarding and surfing. After earning her bachelors in graphic design in 2000, she started working for Mervin Manufacturing as a graphic designer and has been with them ever since. Nowadays, she lives in Port Angeles, WA, with her partner Pete and their children Hoko and Ailo. When she’s not juggling pixels, she thoroughly enjoys their proxim-ity to the mountains and the ocean with her family and friends. An ecologist by trade, Connor Wood is a snowboarder at heart. Growing up outside Chicago, Connor began snowboarding at 13 years old, rid-ing the many hills of the Midwest. After college, he spent a year working in a snowboard/bike shop in Vermont before going to graduate school, ultimately earning a doctorate in wildlife ecology. He finally managed to merge his two passions via a project he describes in this issue (see “The Yosemite Toad and the Invisible Mountains of the Sierra Nevada” on page 054). He currently lives in Ithaca, NY, where he works as a researcher at the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, part of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
