COVER After five days of biking through the United Kingdom’s wet and windy country-side, Victor Daviet, Sebastian Konijnenberg and photographer Julien “Perly” Petry reached their diminutive destination: Warmwell Snowsports Centre in Dorset. See the story of their gonzo, pedal-powered dryslope adventure starting on page 084. Seeking a heelside awakening, Hagen took a break from the bright lights of the World Cup boardercross tour and found this on the back forty at Whitecap Alpine in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. Climate change came to mind first. What if this becomes the future of snowboarding on the East Coast? The fact that all the visible snow was human made was disappointing but made for an interesting photo. The mountains in the background, the grass in the foreground, the light, and the small people made it worth pulling out my camera on an otherwise lackluster day.” Photo: Nathanael Asaro “I had posted up just outside the resort boundary on Whistler, BC, waiting to capture some sunset action on a couple hits that I’d scoped beforehand with Ben Poechman. The sun was out, but it was still cold and windy, so we sat behind a frosted-over rock to stay protected from the elements. As the colors started to turn on the horizon, I was framing up a shot of some mountains in the distance. Out of nowhere a raven swooped through the frame.” Photo: Stuart Costello 07 03 “I had been wanting to shoot someone on this cannon in Montpelier at the Vermont State House for a couple of years. I mentioned it to Zebbadiah Cousins-Joyce because he lives just up the street from it. While shooting a rail in Montpelier with my friend Brett Matckie, I texted Zeb to see if he was free and down to session the cannon. Zeb drove down from his house, got out of his car in sweatpants, scoped the scene, and said, ‘I’ll be back with my board.’ He returned quickly and had this frontside grab slide dialed—it only took a handful of tries.” Photo: Nathanael Asaro “I told this woman at Brighton, UT, I liked her iridescent snowsuit and asked her if I could take her portrait. She said that was fine and then asked how I wanted her to stand. Before I could reply she had placed her board in the snow and struck this pose. I just smiled and thought, ‘Yeah, that’s perfect.’” Photo: Benjamin Littler 08 04 “Ryan Paterson putting down a chicane on the infamous Forum step-down in the Whistler, BC backcountry. Soon after, the iPhone clip was posted, a never-been-done comment was made, and thus began some good old Instagram drama. To set the record straight: Iikka Backstrom was the first to land a Chicane on this jump, but Paterson is the first Canadian to do so, I think.” Photo: Justin Kious “I’d been in Haines, AK, for a week already and despite low tide conditions, extended high pressure had the upper elevations of the Chilkat Range riding well. As my crew left town, Mary Rand (pictured) and Taylor Godber graciously offered me a seat with them for the day as they filmed for an upcoming The North Face project. It was a dream scenario: sunshine, stability and a private bird with a great crew. After morning lines on a nearby face, Mary and Taylor decided to drop into this long, pillowed rib. Filmer Alexander D’Agostino and I found a perch on a nearby ridge while Connor Winton flew his drone from below. The top was perfect, but the bottom turned into a rock and ice battle. Worth it? I’d assume so.” Photo: Colin Wiseman 09 When Lionel Moerch isn’t busy with his full-time job, he’s filming, editing, and organizing nearly everything that goes into the JOURNAL. movies. He even designed the board that he’s using to gap 50-50 this stair-set in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Photo: Ahriel Povich 05 It was one of those elusive Pacific Northwest bluebird days with a few friends visiting Matt Wainhouse in our Washington state backyard at Stevens Pass. Waino led the charge, showed his guests a great time, and at the end of the day he dusted off a classic Hollywood Bowl step down. He started the festivi-ties with a textbook cab 5 first hit and wrapped up his opening maneuver with this gorgeous bow in the run out. Photo: Thomas Portet THE SNOWBOARDER’S JOURNAL 015
