“It was 1997 and I was traveling from Mt. Baker [WA] to Innsbruck [Austria] for the Air & Style. The contest had been happening since 1993, but 1996 felt like its big breakout year. It was the event—the biggest at the time, as far as I can remember. I couldn’t get any assignments, so I traveled to Europe solo on my own volition. Tens of thousands of people showed up at the [Bergisel] ski-jumping stadium in downtown Innsbruck. Faith No More and Bad Religion played during the event, the Reef bikini girls were standing around freezing their asses off, and MTV Europe was there to simulcast the whole thing. It was really a spectacle. Jamie Lynn did a rodeo and got second. Jim Rippey was first and Michi Albin landed in third.
I showed up to the hotel everyone was staying at, walked into the dining room, acted like a total deer-in-headlights, then Jamie saw me. We were friends from Mt. Baker and he came over and gave me a hug. I was out of my element and didn’t know anyone there, then suddenly everyone wanted to know who I was because I was talking to Jamie. So it really meant the world to me for him to do that. More Jamie-isms, right?”
