DAM DETOUR IN IDAHO

Julian Gluck has been on a serious tear these past few seasons. He capped off the winter with this 5050 to wallride in Cascade, ID.

About 70 miles north of Boise, ID, is a small town called Cascade. Cascade has a population of approximately 1,000 people. It’s a sleepy spot and is apparently a nice area if you’re into fishing.

But as I passed through Cascade with Julian Gluck in late March, we didn’t have fishing on our minds. Rather, Julian wanted to find one more spot, and this drive from McCall to Boise seemed as good a time as any to find something fresh.

So, as we reached the southeast shore of Lake Cascade, a reservoir on the north fork of the Payette River, we decided to stop and see what Cascade had in store. We first spotted a rail with some snow and a few steel dinosaur structures surrounding it, but that didn’t quite work. Then we spotted the dam.

We crossed a bridge to reach the dam and could see the snow lined up perfectly on the looker’s right-hand side, allowing Julian a run out from the bank. Assuming the townspeople of Cascade don’t often see street-snowboarding outsiders and therefore we had roughly a 100 percent chance of being busted, we worked quickly and quietly. Julian hopped the fence to get a closer look. I drove farther down the road to find a spot to set up cameras. I placed Julian’s Panasonic video camera on a tripod before getting in position to snap stills. A quiet calmness was in the air just before Julian called his drop.

He popped a little air in from the top, made a couple of controlled turns, then hit a 5050 to wallride into the dam, riding through the bottom transition at Mach 10. Once he landed, it started dumping—that inch-per-hour-type snow. I drove back to the top to pick up Julian, he hopped in the car, boots still on, and we continued through the storm to Boise. One and done on a uniquely Idaho line.
