On a cloudless day in Carlsbad, CA, Mike Yoshida and I get the nod from on-site security to enter the Kingdom, TaylorMade Golf Company’s elite fitting facility. Eero Niemela, shifting effortlessly into his new professional realm, emerges to meet us out front and brings us inside. The ambiance is unmistakably prestigious; PGA bags embroidered with legendary names like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa and Rickie Fowler line the space, reminders of golf’s grandeur and the elites who walk through these doors.
Without missing a beat, Eero zeroes in, analyzing every nuance of my swing. Here at TaylorMade, he has the very important job of master fitter, which entails identifying swing characteristics to build a personalized set of clubs that will maximize a golfer’s performance. The facility’s proprietary technology diligently collects data to zero in on the perfect club build. It’s intriguing to witness Eero’s unwavering focus here, knowing he once was known for being one of Finland’s most iconic snowboarding talents.
Eero’s journey is an ode to adaptability, talent and the relentless pursuit of passion. From the flatlands of Finland, dotted with countless lakes and framed by Sweden, the Arctic Circle and Russia, Eero journeyed to the vibrant heart of the Golden State. His image was easy to find in print and he was featured in films including Volcom’s Escramble, Brain Farm’s That’s It That’s All Transworld SNOWboarding’s Get Real, the Get Out of Town series, the Wildcats movies—just to name a few.
But snowboarding wasn’t Eero’s only forte. In San Diego County, he discovered the greener side of Southern California. Golf resonated with Eero. A conversation we had about 14 years ago during a K2 event at Mt. Baker, WA, is vivid in my memory. When I asked about his golf handicap, Eero said calmly, “I’m a 5.” A 5 handicap puts him in the top 10 percent of golfers, and such an achievement speaks volumes about Eero’s innate talent, especially for someone not raised on a fairway.
By 2010, Eero’s affinity for the game evolved into a deeper commitment. Alongside Bart Wilson from Wasserman, the sports agency who represented him, Eero joined the Loma Club, turning golf from a mere pastime into a disciplined pursuit. He balanced his time between Southern California, global filming projects and extended stays while filming in British Columbia, playing courses along the Sea-To-Sky Corridor with Devun Walsh, another avid golfer.
In 2018, Eero made a change. He enrolled in the in the PGA Golf Management University Program, immersing himself fully in the sport’s multifaceted world. From understanding the intricacies of a swing to grasping the nuances of facilities management, he mastered it all. This journey culminated in a role at the Grand Golf Club in San Diego, where he put all of his skills to work. From humbling experiences cleaning clubs as they returned to the clubhouse, to assistant pro, to golf fittings, Eero learned the craft behind golf. Then Eero’s expertise found a home at TaylorMade’s Kingdom. Here, PGA pros from diverse circuits depend on Eero’s discerning eye and data analysis to enhance their game. His recognition as TaylorMade’s 2022 Master Fitter of the Year was a testimony to his unparalleled expertise.
Eero’s transition from Finland’s snowscapes to the golf greens of Southern California underscores a profound message: It’s not about the sport, it’s about the spirit. As he articulates beautifully, “Let the athlete in you complete the swing.”
