The Summer Snowboard Circus

2017-10-30 16:33:51

“When running the Snoboard Shop out of Calgary, AB in the early-to-mid 1980s, Ken Achenbach used to say, ‘We didn’t sell you a board, we sold you a new life,’ and he was right. His next endeavor at Camp of Champions on the Blackcomb Glacier changed people. Most of my friends and I were indelibly shaped by the summer snowboard circus. I know it was true for the generation that came after us too. If only we could translate all that passion into the energy to turn back the clock. Even back in 1992 when people like Terje Haakonsen (pictured here) were coming to camp, we saw the glacier shrinking and we knew it was only a matter of time before camp closed its doors. RIP Camp of Champions, 1989-2016.” Photo: Dano Pendygrasse
