LEFT At the top of the Wilderness Chair at Bolton Valley, VT. I hiked there solo at 6 a.m. in the dark before working on a shoot at Ben & Jerry’s in Williston. It was November and the base was just starting to build up. I remember feeling a little sketched out not knowing if all the rocks were covered. I stayed light on my feet and wiggled down until I could open it up and get my powder fix for the day. BELOW I got a call from “Status” (Jeff Rawlins) asking if I wanted to go check out the Underhill side of Mount Mansfield with Evan Rose, pictured here. It was late December and we had been having good, consistent snow, but it was raining on this day. I was a bit hesitant to go, but needed some fresh air and good company. I met them in Richmond and we drove to the state park. The road was a sheet of ice. We parked on the side and started hiking up, then Evan showed us this stair set. I said I’d get the shot if they did something on the stairs. Just before they dropped in, I got a phone call. I had my camera in one hand and my phone in the other. Luckily, I didn’t completely blow the shot. We proceeded to jib around on the state park features before we hiked into the woods to connect with our run to the car. The ride down started out good, but ended with rocks, mud, ice and unstrapping. Regardless of the conditions, we were outside snowboarding and having fun. NATHANAEL ASARO 039
